Application Develoment Engineer

Job Overview

We are looking for a talented Application Development Engineer to join the RSM Defense Engineering team. This role focuses primarily on software development, application development, API integrations, and security automation engineering.

The ideal candidate is a developer-first professional with strong programming and software engineering fundamentals. The candidate should be comfortable building scalable applications, backend services, integrations, and automation solutions while working in a cybersecurity environment.

When application development priorities are lower, the engineer will contribute to SOAR development, workflow automation, and security engineering initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Application & Software Development

• Design, develop, maintain, and enhance internal applications, services, utilities, and engineering tools.
• Develop production-quality applications using Python, JavaScript, Go, SQL, and other relevant technologies.
• Apply object-oriented programming, modular design, reusable components, and software design patterns.
• Develop scalable, maintainable, testable, and extensible solutions.
• Troubleshoot, debug, refactor, and enhance existing applications and codebases.
• Participate in code reviews and follow software development best practices.

API & Integration Development

• Design and develop integrations between security platforms, internal applications, and third-party services.
• Develop and consume REST APIs, Webhooks, SDKs, and other programmatic interfaces.
• Work with JSON, XML, and CSV for data transformation and normalization.
• Troubleshoot API failures, authentication issues, data transformation problems, and system dependencies.
• Implement authentication and authorization mechanisms such as API Keys, OAuth, Tokens, and Service Accounts.

Security Automation & SOAR

• Develop and maintain automation workflows supporting security operations and incident response.
• Build custom integrations, scripts, functions, and services to extend SOAR platform capabilities.
• Work with security analysts and engineering teams to identify automation opportunities.
• Contribute to SOAR development and security automation initiatives.
• Continuously learn and develop knowledge of cybersecurity technologies and automation platforms.

Automation & Engineering Tooling

• Develop automation tools using Python, Bash, and PowerShell.
• Build reusable libraries, modules, connectors, and services.
• Identify opportunities to replace manual processes with scalable automation solutions.
• Troubleshoot and enhance existing automation tools and engineering services.

Cloud & DevOps

• Deploy and support applications and integrations using AWS.
• Work with AWS services such as:
  • Lambda
  • EC2
  • S3
  • IAM
  • API Gateway
• Work with Infrastructure-as-Code frameworks such as AWS SAM or Terraform.
• Use Git-based source control, branching strategies, pull requests, and code reviews.
• Participate in CI/CD pipelines, testing, deployment, and release management.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in application development, backend development, software engineering, or system integrations.
• Strong programming experience in at least one of the following:
  • Python
  • JavaScript
  • Go
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, Webhooks, JSON, and third-party integrations.
• Experience with authentication methods such as OAuth, API Keys, Tokens, and Service Accounts.
• Strong understanding of:

• Experience with Git and version control systems.
• Experience with Unit Testing and Integration Testing.
• Knowledge of Bash and/or PowerShell scripting.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Understanding of secure software development practices.
• Good communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Skills

• Experience working in a Cybersecurity or MSSP environment.
• Experience integrating security technologies such as:
  • SIEM
  • SOAR
  • EDR/XDR
  • Identity platforms
  • Vulnerability Management
  • Threat Intelligence
  • Case Management platforms
• Experience with SOAR platforms such as Torq or similar technologies.
• Experience with AWS and Serverless Application Development.
• Knowledge of Terraform or AWS SAM.
• Experience with CI/CD and DevOps practices.
• Familiarity with Docker and container technologies.
• Understanding of Security Operations and Incident Response processes.
