About GentleDental.aiGentleDental.ai is building the Gentle AI Smart Toothbrush and a connected oral-health intelligence ecosystem combining embedded electronics, imaging, biosensing, AI and IoT.
Our current focus is converting a functional Alpha prototype into a production-intent Beta product through an in-house engineering team supported by specialist consultants.
This is not a conventional software internship. The trainee will work directly on a real connected hardware product involving sensors, cameras, motors, batteries, BLE/Wi-Fi communication and laboratory validation.
Role OverviewWe are looking for an Embedded Firmware & IoT Intern / Engineer Trainee who can support firmware development, device communication, sensor integration, debugging and structured laboratory validation of the Gentle AI Smart Toothbrush.
The role will work closely with our electronics, mechanical, AI/software and DFM teams to ensure that the physical device, firmware and application layer function reliably as one integrated system.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working with actual hardware, reading datasheets, debugging boards and systematically finding out why something does not work rather than merely reporting that it does not work.
Key Responsibilities1.
Embedded Firmware
Development
Develop, modify and test embedded firmware for the smart toothbrush platform.Work primarily with ESP32-class microcontrollers and associated peripherals.Implement and debug:GPIOICSPIUARTADCPWMtimersinterruptslow-power modesSupport firmware integration for sensors, motor controls, LEDs, camera interfaces and power-management components.Develop robust device state machines for different operating modes.Support boot, reset, watchdog and error-recovery mechanisms.2. Sensor & Peripheral IntegrationSupport integration and validation of components such as:
PPG / optical biosensorsIMU / accelerometercamera modulesLEDs and illumination systemsvibration motorbattery monitoring and fuel-gauge ICscharging circuitrybuttons, switches and other peripheralsTasks will include:
reading datasheets and reference designs;bringing up new components;validating communication;collecting raw sensor data;identifying noise and signal-integrity problems;assisting the team in firmware-level troubleshooting.3. BLE, Wi-Fi & IoT ConnectivityDevelop and test Bluetooth Low Energy communication between the device and mobile/application layer.Define and implement BLE services and characteristics where required.Support reliable streaming of sensor and device-status data.Test packet loss, reconnection, latency and communication stability.Support Wi-Fi connectivity and IoT communication where required.Assist in defining device-to-cloud communication architecture.Support device identification, configuration and provisioning workflows.4. Data Acquisition & LoggingBuild firmware routines for structured collection of raw sensor data.Ensure correct timestamping and synchronization of signals.Support export of sensor data for analysis by the AI and clinical teams.Implement diagnostic logs for:firmware events;sensor status;communication errors;battery behaviour;device faults.Help create repeatable test datasets for algorithm development.5. Power & Battery ValidationWork with the electronics team to evaluate:
active and standby power consumption;battery runtime;sleep/wake behaviour;charging performance;thermal behaviour;abnormal battery discharge;peripheral power sequencing.Assist in firmware optimization for improved battery life and reliable device operation.
Lab Testing & ValidationA significant part of this role will involve hands-on laboratory validation.
The trainee will
execute structured engineering test protocols;operate prototype boards and assembled devices;reproduce hardware/firmware failures;document test conditions and observations;perform repeated stress and endurance testing;validate firmware releases before integration;identify regressions between firmware versions;support prototype and Beta-unit testing.Testing may include:
BLE range and stability;battery-life testing;motor operation;sensor acquisition;repeated charging cycles;device temperature;communication reliability;continuous operation;abnormal use conditions.7. Debugging & Root-Cause AnalysisUse engineering tools such as:
multimeter;oscilloscope;logic analyser;serial terminal;debug interfaces;firmware logs.The expectation is to move from:
The device failed.
to:
The device failed under X condition because Y subsystem behaved incorrectly, and the probable corrective action is Z.
DocumentationMaintain clear engineering documentation, including:
