Operations Specialist (Medical Coding)

Role Summary
We are looking for an Operations Specialist Medical Coding with 57 years of strong, hands-on experience in US medical coding operations. This role is designed for a professional who combines deep subject matter expertise in medical coding with the ability to lead day-to day operational workflows, ensure quality, and serve as the primary bridge between coding teams and client requirements.
You will be responsible for managing work queues, conducting quality audits, driving team productivity, and supporting client-facing initiatives all while maintaining hands-on coding expertise.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct 5% quality checks on coded claims to ensure accuracy, compliance, and adherence to payer-specific guidelines
Monitor and manage work queues to ensure timely and efficient assignment and completion of coding tasks
Assign work to team members based on skill sets, availability, and priority levels to maintain optimal throughput
Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on client-specific requirements, coding guidelines, and operational protocols
Support and participate in client calls as needed, providing operational updates, addressing queries, and representing the coding team
Contribute to and support pilot project requirements, including new client onboarding, process testing, and workflow documentation
Handle day-to-day operational tasks, including escalation management, productivity tracking, and team coordination
Identify quality trends and root causes of coding errors; implement corrective actions and feedback loops
Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations and US healthcare coding standards (CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS)
Support documentation, audit readiness, and process improvement initiatives
Required Qualifications
57 years of hands-on US medical coding and/or coding operations experience
Strong understanding of CPT, ICD-10-CM/PCS, and HCPCS coding systems and payer specific rules
Demonstrated experience in quality auditing and feedback delivery
Familiarity with work queue management and productivity monitoring tools
Experience working across multiple specialties (e.g., E/M, surgery, radiology, or similar)
Ability to independently handle complex coding scenarios and escalations
Strong communication skills for client and stakeholder interactions
Detail-oriented with excellent problem-solving and organizational abilities
Preferred / Good to Have
CPC, CCS, or equivalent coding certification (AAPC / AHIMA)
Exposure to AI-assisted coding tools or RCM automation platforms
Experience supporting client onboarding and pilot projects
Familiarity with EMR/PMS systems such as Epic, Athenahealth, or similar
